The owner of Archangel Coins is passionate about history

Archangel Coins owner and founder Chris Shands has turned his passion for history into a successful numismatic business.

“When it comes to coins, the fun part is remembering that it’s history,” Shands said. “It brings the past to life.”

Shands thriving coin shop located at 594 S. Decatur Blvd. underwent a recent expansion doubling the store’s footprint to 1,800 square feet.

“The expansion was planned the day I rented the original space,” Shands said. “I knew quickly that it was going to become something that needed more space.”

The additional floor space allows Shands to significantly increase the inventory on display, including a wide selection of US and foreign collectibles, currencies, and precious metals such as gold and silver.

“I would say we have the biggest selection on display,” Shands said of his local presence. “I don’t see anyone else who has eight crates full of coins, plus several wall crates. We have well over 2,000 pieces on display daily.

Shands has further increased its inventory of historic antiques, including rare American and Civil War items.

“We were literally tripping over each other behind glass,” Shands said of the reason for the expansion. “The extra space allows us to help our customers faster.”

Shands, a proponent of education, now has a space to hold educational classes focused on the intricacies of numismatics. It plans to cover topics such as classification and counterfeit detection.

“The store serves as a free exchange of information,” Shands said. “We don’t want to upset people. One of our biggest goals is to make sure that when someone leaves our store, they feel like they’ve made new friends.

In addition to the retail store, Shands plans to launch a new website this spring.

“We hope to have it done by the end of April,” Shands said. “It will replace our current website.”

The modified website, www.archangelcoins.comoffers a blog, a video channel called “Live Saturday Numismaticsand the self-paced Coin University educational program. All resources are completely free.

“The website will be an in-depth coin learning platform,” Shands said. “The overall experience is going to be intensive, like a digital textbook.”

In addition to the educational component, the website expands the virtual showcase.

“This will be the first time we’ve had inventory listed on our website for purchase,” Shands said. “And not through any other platform.”

The renovation comes at a good time with significant changes in the numismatic market as the economy reacts to record inflation and global uncertainty.

“On March 8, gold hit an all-time high price,” Shands said. “It is significant.”

As markets evolve, interest in precious metals and collectibles is growing rapidly.

“For those looking to sell, this is potentially a good time,” Shands said. “The market is on fire.
