Tyler’s details are built on passion

With seven years of experience, the Superior Man offers automotive detailing and paint correction services at Detailing by Tyler, located in Suite 8 of the Horizons Building on the 1400 block of Tower Avenue.

The highlight of the business, he said, is being able to work with a wide variety of vehicles, from an emerald green 1931 Lincoln limousine to a sleek, black Ford F350 Platinum truck. It is this passion that sets Detailing by Tyler apart.

“We have good competition in town right now with Detail and Dash and Rice Lake Precision, so it’s good competition and they do a really good job, but there’s no way they like cars. more than me, ”Kiel said.

It shows, said Superior’s Griff Coffman.

“It’s nice to have someone who takes pride in it and really enjoys what they do to provide a service like this,” he said.

When Coffman needed to detail his SUV before selling it, he called in Kiel. The contractor was booked, but made room for Coffman’s ride. The children’s stains and the dirt accumulated by the dog were gone when he came to pick it up.

“It looked like it was brand new,” Coffman said of the 2017 vehicle. “I specifically remember it was summer and I opened the door to get in and back home. And I looked at the floor in there, and it was so shiny, clean, and new that I actually took off my shoes before I got in the car.

He said Kiel worked with him to make things as easy as possible, from integrating work and organizing pickup times to offering different payment options.

“I have recommended it to almost anyone asking in town,” Coffman said.

Entrepreneurship is nothing new in Kiel. After graduating from upper secondary school in 2014, he started his own lawn care business. He then went to work in a number of retail stores in the Twin Ports, learning the trade and falling in love with cars. After making the transition to work in the beer industry, he continued to receive calls from former customers.

Kiel launched Detailing by Tyler in spring 2020 in his father’s garage, moving to the Horizons Building space, which previously housed R&R Radiator, in October 2021.

The industry is constantly changing.

“When I jumped in, no one was applying ceramic coatings,” Kiel said; instead, it was wax.

Today, 50% of its activity is in ceramic coating, or paint correction. The process includes pre-washing and hand washing the vehicle. Kiel inspects the vehicle for scratches and discolored areas before coating, then takes a different approach for each. Older vehicles have thicker, man-applied paint, which requires a different styling than new thin-film vehicles.

The ceramic coating is rated for five years and takes 24 hours to dry and adhere to the paint. Kiel teaches owners how to take care of their rides to maximize protection.

“I show them how to wash it, take care of it,” he said. “It’s car maintenance for people who love their cars.”

The other half of the business is detailed. Steam cleaning is now the norm, but a new technology on the horizon is dry ice blasting. Between the changes and the fierce competition, Kiel said: “You have to stay in control. “

One way it has grown its audience is through TikTok. Kiel shares before and after videos, as well as comic book clips, under the name “refreshmyride”.
