West Hartford Community Theater proudly presents tick, tick… BOOM! a autobiographical musical written by Pulitzer Prize-winning and Tony Prize-winning composer Jonathan Larson Lease.

Different from the big film of 2021 directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, it was the musical version that started it all, with its Broadway debut in 2001, leading to multiple national and international productions, national tours and two revivals in 2014 and 2016.

The show tells the story of an aspiring composer who questions his life choices on the eve of his 30th birthday. His girlfriend wants to get married and leave town, his best friend is combing Madison Avenue, but Jonathan is still a waiter trying to finish writing his musical. His wick was lit. How long does he have left before he can achieve his dreams? Or will it all blow up in his face? This uplifting, funny and moving work by the late Larson will speak to anyone who has ever gotten lost on the path to finding their dreams.

Directed by Corinne Kravetz with musical director David Jarkey, the three-person cast includes Brandon Allen as Jonathan, Reilly Lincavicks as Susan and Henley Solomon as Michael. Guided by co-producers Theresa Szymanski and Marybeth Lavelle, this musical marks a departure from the grand musicals that West Hartford Community Theater fans have come to expect.

“Breaking out of the restrictions that theaters have faced during the pandemic, we chose this play specifically for its smaller cast. We then discovered that, just like in Broadway productions, this smaller cast really enhanced the intimacy of the show,” says Szymanski. “Just like the Broadway version, our show has multiple characters, all played by just three actors, and that really heightens the passion and excitement; it really intensifies the relationships depicted. It deepens the whole experience,” says Lavelle.

Connecticut theater fans might recognize director Corinne Kravetz for her previous work as a former theater teacher and principal at Conard High School, and a variety of experiences with other local schools.

About her latest work as a director on tick, tick…BOOM!, Kravetz says, “Anytime I do an exciting show like this, it’s been great. But with these incredibly talented actors, it’s very special. Everyone is so excited to bring this beautiful play to life in front of a live audience. We can’t wait to share this very relevant show with everyone!

Musical director David Jarkey described the cast’s singing ability: “Brandon, Reilly and Henley are not to be missed. They are vocal powers.

The show runs for four nights, September 9-10 and 16-17, 2022 at the Braeburn School Theater, 45 Braeburn Road in West Hartford, CT.
